Analysis of Litter Graphs
From the calculation of all the groups, the largest litter type is plastic. Nowadays, everyone are using lots of plastic. We could be named the ‘Plastic Age’ from the huge amount of plastic that we use for everything everyday. Plastic is tough, light, strong and is easily moulded into almost any shape. It can also be made in many colours and waterproof, therefore it can last for a very long time. It is the ideal material to make lots of things, which is why majority of the litter collected are plastics. Because of human interactions, there are many rubbish found at the beach. People these days do not know how to clean up their litter and just left it there for the waves/wind. There is a higher percentage for plastics, paper and others because that is what majority of the things used by human were made of. The category ‘others’ consist of other objects which proves human interaction, such as candy wrappers, cigaratte buds, diapers, balloons and many more. Another pattern seen in the types of litter is longshore drift. Because plastics are pretty light, they are easily travelled through wind and water.
There are lots of different types of litter that can be found at the beach. The amount of litter found was quite terrifying. People that litter might not know that they are unconsciously destroying their home. There would be less litter if people could remember to throw their rubbish away carefully instead of just leaving them there to rot at the beach. There could also be organisations that promotes keeping beaches clean, as well as activities to help clean the beaches. Schools and communities could start educating people more on the topic of littering, what the consequences are and how to prevent it.

In my group, the highest amount of litter collected is plastic. The similarities between the two pie graphs are the fact that plastic and paper are two of the larger section in the graph, which indicates that there are more litter made from this two materials. The difference between the two pie graphs is the percentage amount of paper compare to others. Overall, there were more litter in the category of ‘others’ than paper. However, paper have a higher percentage for our group than others. There are two reasons why there are more litter of those materials. The first reason is longshore drift. Because longshore drift consists of the transportation of sediments along the coast at an angle to the shoreline depending on the wind direction, the litter were ‘transported’ to the shore and more towards our area. Another reason there are plenty of litters is caused by human activities. Some people that visited this beach did not clean up their mess, therefore there were plenty of trash around the beach.
